The Artist

Shampa Sircar Das is a New Delhi based fine artist whose work engages deeply with Indian philosophy, spirituality, and ecological consciousness. A BFA graduate from the College of Art, Delhi, and MFA from Jamia Millia Islamia, her practice evolved after transformative journeys to Leh and Ladakh. She has exhibited widely across India and internationally, including New York, London, Dubai, Singapore, and South Korea, and is the recipient of the Raja Ravi Varma Samman and the Bharat Nirman Award for Brilliance in Art.

The Inspiration

Bhumi emerges from her reverence for the Earth as a living, sacred presence. Influenced by Himalayan murals weathered by time, she reflects on impermanence and renewal. Motifs such as the peacock, fish, lotus, swan, and deer draw from Buddhist and Vedic symbolism, representing vitality, fertility, transcendence, purity, and spiritual seeking.

Rooted in the philosophy of Purusha and Prakriti, the work speaks of balance between consciousness and matter. In a hyper connected world, Bhumi becomes a call to slow down, realign with nature, and honor the sacred cycle of life.

From Sari to Art

The sari began with block printing, layered with hand painting. Inspired by thangkas, stupas, cloud formations, and floral motifs from her travels across East and South India, the composition intentionally moved beyond the rigidity of traditional block grids. Allowing rawness within structure became part of the process.

Through layered mixed media, she translated her textured canvas language onto fabric, preserving depth while embracing fluidity.

Message for the World

Bhumi carries a quiet pride in the circle of life. When worn, it is meant to evoke grounding, awareness, and harmony with nature.

It is a reminder that the Earth is not separate from us. We belong to it.
