The Artist

Born in 1975 in Beed, Maharashtra, Sanjay Raut is a contemporary fine artist whose work is rooted in childhood memory, storytelling, and the cultural rhythms of village life. Drawing from his early years in a Maharashtrian village, he creates evocative scenes that revisit a world of ritual, devotion, and quiet discipline. Sanjay has held solo exhibitions at Jehangir Art Gallery, Kala Ghoda Art Festival, and Pradarshak Art Gallery. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions across Pune, Mumbai, and Delhi.

The Inspiration

Gurukul reflects a space of profound stillness punctuated by rhythmic sound. It recalls early morning chants, the quiet discipline of study, and the deep bond between teacher and student.

The sari embodies ethnic identity as lived culture. It invites the wearer to reconnect with ancestral memory and feel the continuity of tradition in the present. The visual language speaks of nostalgia, reverence, and belonging.

This work is about connection with the past and the quiet dignity of inherited wisdom.

From Sari to Art

Working on fabric required careful technical planning.

To prevent bleeding and spreading, Sanjay used fabric primer and avoided acrylic colors. He maintained consistent tension throughout the process to ensure stability. Since painting a sari takes days or weeks, maintaining color consistency was essential. Mixing the exact same custom shade twice is nearly impossible, so he worked methodically to preserve tonal balance.

He used fabric colors along with natural hair brushes with soft tips to achieve controlled detailing. Particular attention was given to achieving a drape friendly texture so that the sari remains fluid and comfortable.

Message for the World

This sari is meant to evoke profound stillness, layered with rhythmic memory.

It should make the wearer feel connected to tradition and experience a sense of cultural continuity. It carries nostalgia, reminiscence, and heritage not as relics of the past but as living forces that shape the present.

It is an offering to memory.
A tribute to learning.
A reminder that tradition still breathes.
