
Kanchan Chander
is a fine artist known for her autobiographical works that explore fertility, motherhood, and feminine power. She holds a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the College of Art, Delhi, with additional training in Santiago, Berlin, and Paris.
Her works are held in the National Gallery of Modern Art New Delhi, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, The British Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. She has received the BC Sanyal Award, Yuva Mahotsava Award, and Sahitya Kala Parishad Award.
She has held solo shows in India and abroad and participated in major exhibitions including the 1st Print Biennale India at NGMA (2018).

Journey
Kanchan received formal training from the College of Art, Delhi, and studied printmaking in Chile, Germany, and France. She received fellowships including the Lalit Kala Akademi Research Grant (1982-83) and French Government Scholarship (1984-85).
Inspired by Frida Kahlo, Amrita Sher-Gil, and classical Indian temple sculptures, she developed an autobiographical practice that continues to investigate inner and outer worlds through layered work.

Style
Kanchan transforms classical Indian temple forms into contemporary expressions using vibrant colors, gold leaf, and mixed media including lace, sequins, wood, metal, and canvas. Her work focuses on mythic feminine figures including Bhoota figures, tribal imagery, and Shakti cult representations.
She has worked primarily in etchings and aquatints for four decades. In later works, child figures and toys explore mother-child interdependency. Her personal experiences including dilemmas, conflicts, joys, aches drive her artistic expression.
