Journey

Sangeeta was born in the tribal town of Buldhana, near the Ajanta Caves. The region’s rich artistic heritage and deep Buddhist legacy quietly shaped her sensibilities.

She graduated as a gold medalist from the Government College of Art, Aurangabad, and was awarded a Fellowship. She later spent 14 years in advertising with McCann Worldgroup.

Despite a successful career, her calling to share the wisdom of Gautama Buddha remained strong. She eventually stepped away from advertising to pursue art full-time, dedicating herself to her distinctive Buddha series.

Since then, her work has been exhibited in group and solo shows across Dubai, the US, Indonesia, London, Singapore, and India. In 2019, she was invited to the Florence Biennale XII, where her anamorphic sculpture, merging science and art, received global recognition.

The BBC was looking for a contemporary artist inspired by ancient art for its semicentennial documentary Civilisation. She was featured in Episode 9, God and Art, where her work formed part of a global reflection on the relationship between creativity and the sacred.

Style

Sangeeta's work explores the life and teachings of Lord Buddha, with particular fascination for the Bodhi Tree. She employs complex techniques and meticulous detailing that result in surprising visual simplicity, reminiscent of Buddha himself.

She extensively uses gold leaf in her oil paintings and sculptures, and works with diverse materials including resin and discarded keyboards. Recent works incorporate eco-friendly materials like paper mâché from children's notebooks and methi seeds as glue.

She wraps her Buddha sculptures with positive news articles from newspapers, conveying that no circumstance is beyond redemption. Just as good news surrounds the Buddha, she believes our lives can be infused with peace and tranquility.
