The Inspiration

Rooted in Exile unfolds on a Maheshwari silk sari, with the border and pallu creating narrative spaces.

A group of women sit together in quiet conversation, relaxed and attentive, their exchange carrying resilience, and shared understanding.

Rendered in a linear, folk-inspired style, the figures move naturally with the weave. The border frames them while the pallu allows the conversation to flow freely.

The sari reflects migration and the tension between belonging and displacement. Earth tones, symbolic feminine forms, and layered textures convey time, resilience, and emotional memory.

From Sari to Art

Working on silk required both precision and patience.

The fabric absorbs pigment unpredictably, demanding careful control. Laxman used fine acrylic paint markers for delicate line work and layered textile pigments to build depth without stiffening the silk. Balancing discipline with spontaneity was the central challenge.

Silk’s fluidity brought poetry to the process, while its unpredictability reflected exile itself: fragile, uncertain, and transformative. Every stroke was made to honor movement, ensuring the canvas flows naturally with the body.
